If you work in an office building with more than a few floors, chances are you’ve had to deal with elevators.
In some ways, elevators are their own little world, complete with their own ecosystem and rules. Elevator etiquette is an important and often neglected topic.
Here are some basic considerations to keep in mind when riding in an elevator:
· Don’t try to get on the elevator before the people already in it have had a chance to get off.
· If you’re sick, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. If possible, cough into your arm rather than your hand so as to avoid spreading germs to elevator buttons.
· Don’t push someone out of the way to push the button for your floor. Instead, politely ask if they’ll press the button for you if you can't reach.
· Hold the door if you see someone rushing for the elevator or if they call out and ask you to hold it. If you see someone walking towards the elevator, they may not be about to step on, so don’t delay other passengers by holding the door.
· Small talk in the elevator is generally discouraged, unless you know the person.
· Avoid talking on your cell phone when you’re riding an elevator. Your audience is captive and doesn’t want to listen into your conversations.
· If you must have a conversation in the elevator, do it at a volume that isn’t disturbing to other passengers.
