The volatile job market is, in many ways, a sign of the times. Today’s economy means that, among other things, you need to keep the job you have.
It’s more important now more than ever to be a success at your job.
So, how do you do that? How do you become so valuable to a company that no matter how tough the economy gets, they can’t afford to lose you?
You need to excel in two general areas to be a success in your job: performance and politics. We’ll look at performance in this post and discuss politics in my next post.
The key to job security in any economy is performance. You need to do your job and do it to the best of your ability.
Start with knowing your job. This includes both the clear requirements of the job – those tasks listed on a piece of paper somewhere in the human resources department – as well as the unspoken requirements that often get heaped onto an admin.
You also have to be dedicated. You need to be willing to do what it takes to succeed. Sometimes, this means making sacrifices. It might mean working through a lunch hour or asking your spouse to pick up the kids from school to work overtime.
Going the extra mile, however, ultimately pays off in job security.
Finally, you have to work on self-improvement. Learning the latest software or developing a new filing system can give you the performance edge you need.
