Every job has its share of problems.
As an administrative assistant, you have your hands involved with so many different tasks and interact with so many different people that you’re going to have to juggle more than your fair share of problems.
That’s what separates the successful admin from the unsuccessful one - the ability to nip problems in the bud.
While every problem has its solution, some general problem-solving steps can help when trouble rears its ugly head:
- Identify the problem. Is it a person? Is it an event? Is a project? Spend some time thinking about the problem, its cause and its impact.
- Don’t let issues go. You want to stop a problem before it becomes a disaster, which means you have to deal with problems early.
- Gather resources. In many cases, you won’t be able to solve a problem on the job by yourself. You might need the help of a boss, of someone from the Human Resources department, or your IT person. Choosing the right partners is a key to solving the problem.
- Formulate a solution. Work together with others to find the optimal solution to the problem.
Ultimately, the sooner you address a problem, the sooner you can resolve it.
