Is your job working for you? Part 2
I wrote recently about how you really have to make sure a job is going to work for you during the negotiation stage of the hiring process. Today, I want to list some of the considerations you might decide to put on your checklist for a job that meets your needs:
- Compensation: You need to make enough money to maintain your standard of living.
- Health and dental insurance: This is a big need especially if you have a family that requires coverage.
- Flextime: How flexible is the work schedule, and how flexible do you need it to be?
- Vacations and holidays: Make sure you can live with the vacation policy.
- Sick days or personal days: Here again, make sure you can live with this policy.
- Maternity or family medical leave: Depending on the size of the company, they may not have to offer this type of leave.
- Bonuses: From signing bonuses to profit-sharing plans, there are a number of ways to boost your compensation.
- Salary reviews and career advancement: You need to know if you’ll be in the same job making the same money five years from now.
Most of these considerations are really are a matter of personal preference and your lifestyle. By identifying which ones are important to you before you accept a job offer, you’re more likely to have a long, happy, and successful career with the company.
