As an executive assistant or office manager, you are going to juggle many tasks. Not only do you have to multitask, you have to stay on top of all sorts of details without feeling overwhelmed by a long list of little tasks.
Early in my administrative assistant career, I often found myself overwhelmed by details. There were way too many little bits to keep track of, from appointments to the location of presentation materials to ordering business cards.
To become successful in my career, I had to find ways to improve my memory. Once I set myself to the task of improving my memory, I found my job seemed much easier, more efficient and better organized.
Here are some proven ways you can improve your memory and increase your performance:
- Get past the idea that you have a bad memory. Most people have the capacity to remember just fine. We use "bad memory" as an excuse to do nothing about it. Start with some confidence and you’ll increase your chances of success.
- Exercise your mind. Develop new mental skills that spur the growth of new nerve connections.
Puzzles, learning a language or even playing a musical instrument can all exercise your mind and improve your memory. - Manage stress. Chronic stress can greatly affect your memory. Keep your stress under control to keep your mind sharp.
- Take care of your body. Eat right and get enough sleep. If your body is out of sorts, your memory will be, too.
- Develop observation skills. Try to see the whole picture, rather than one element. For example, when meeting a new person, make an effort to memorize the person's name, hair color, and any distinguishing features.
- Use repetition. The more you see, hear or think about something, the more likely you are to remember it.
